MAWENZI TECHNICAL CLIMBING GUIDELINES
Guidelines for Mawenzi Climbing
1.0 BACKGROUND
Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the continent of Africa withs three distinct peaks, Shira (3962m), Mawenzi (5149m), and Kibo (5895m)Mawenzi is the second highest peak on Kilimanjaro. The rugged peak of Mawenzi (5,149 m) lies to the east. The volcano known as Mawenzi formed as a result of another eruption within the Shira caldera. The top of its western face is fairly steep with many crags, pinnacles and dyke swarms. Its eastern side falls in cliffs over 1,000 m high in a complex of gullies and rock faces, rising above two deep gorges. Mawezi peaks have seven peaks as listed from north to north:
- Nordecke 5136 m,-
-Hans Meyer 5149 m, highest point,- Purtscheller 5120 m
- Borchers 5115 m
- Klute 5096 m
- Latham Peak 5087 m - Londt 4945 m .
The terrain of Mawenzi peak makes most its peaks unreachable but by technical roped ascents. Thus, these guidelines are therefore developed to set precaution to enable climbers to have important information for the climb.
2.0 AREAS OF OPERATION
There will be three routes for the climbers to Mawenzi peak these include:
i. Rongai route down Marangu gate
ii. Marangu route via Zebra rock down Marangu gate
iii. Machame, Lemosho and Londorosi routes via Northern circuit down Mweka gate.
3.0 TOUR OPERATOR REQUIREMENTS
The operator shall have:-
i. A valid Mountain TTLB license.
ii. A clean business record.
iii. Technical climbing guides
iv. Tour operator should submit application letter attached with technical climbing CV of the clients to the Chief Park Warden.
4.0 ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL CONSIDERATION ISSUES
i. All climbers shall be responsible to the environment
ii.Trash in trash out (TITO) system applies
iii. Rock Scrambling is prohibited. Rock Scrambling is defined as climbing on a rock formation more than ten feet above its base without using proper equipment/gears
5.0 SAFETY, SECURITY AND HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
i.Only experienced rock climbers shall attempt Mawenzi technical climb
ii. Briefing will be conducted by guide prior to departure
iii.Tour operator shall provide a first aid kit for the Mawenzi climbers
iv.Tour operator shall have a reliable communication system and rescue/emergence response plan
v.Visitors must have the following technical climbing mountain gears;
• Long Slings
• Medium length slings
• Carabiners
• Rappell device
• 60m 8.5mm ropes
• Alpine harness
• Locking carabiners
• Climbing boots
• Helmets
• Ice axes
• Crampons
vi. Only one group of two climbers at a time will be allowed during climbing Mawenzi Peak.
vii. Mountain technical climbers shall be careful to avoid accidents
viii. All climbers should adhere with all other park rules and regulations.
ix. Minimum age allowed in the activities shall of or above 18 years old.
6.0 TIMING
Time of Mawenzi technical climbing shall be between 0600 and 1800. Park Authority strongly discourages climbers from deliberately planning and executing night climbs.
7.0 PAYMENT MODALITIES
i. Clients/ tour operators shall pay applicable fee using Government electronic payment gateway (GePG-MoF), online, bank and mobile or any other approved means of payments. Guests/Visitors may reserve and make all the payment online through online TANAPA Portal available on website www.tanzaniaparks.go.tz/onlineportal.
ii. Fees for the activity shall be in accordance to TANAPA tariffs as may be reviewed from time to time.
iii. Fees once paid are non refundable.
iv. Payments may be done at the point of payment of the respective park before commencement of the activity through Master or Visa cards.
8.0 INDEMNITY FORMS
Mawenzi technical climbing is at climber’s own risk. All climbers must fill and sign indemnity forms provided by the park before attempting Mawenzi climb.
9.0 MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF THE ACTIVITY
Regular monitoring shall be carried to assess the impact of the activity and recommend effective mitigation measures or suspension of the activity
