PARE MOUNTAIN AND LAKE JIPE

Pare Mountains And Lake Jipe

Welcome

About 2 hours driving distance from Moshi, the remote and wild Northern Pare Mountains offer a great opportunity for hiking off-the-beaten-path. The drive is very bumpy in places but offers many lovely views of the surrounding countryside, and you’ll pass through many small villages along the way.

Lake Jipe offers a great spectacle for wildlife wonderers. Hippos and crocodiles can be seen crossing the lake. On the Kenyan side, herds of zebras and elephant can be observed grassing at the plains of Tsavo National Park. This lake offers a quintessentially off beaten path experience for adventurers looking to be in contact with local people and experience their life style.

FLOWERS OF KILIMANJARO

PLANTS OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO

What Plants and Trees Will I See on Mount Kilimanjaro?
Climbing through the five ecosystems of Mount Kilimanjaro rewards trekkers with a visual display of brilliant and unique plant life. There are flowers, plants and trees that you can find in no other part of the world but here. In this article, we show you some of the most striking, strange and common flora you will find on the mountain.
Everlasting Flowers
These flowers (Helichrysum meyeri- johannis) are very common on Kilimanjaro at elevations between 8,000 to 15,000 feet. It is the highest flowering plant on the mountain. They are known as everlasting flowers because they can bloom year round. This herbaceous perennial grows in clumps and can reach almost two feet tall.
The everlastings here have a yellowish-brown shade, with lemon-scented, pale white leaves. The leaf, stem and flower structure helps these plants survive the dry and frosty climate of the mountain.

Protea Kilimandscharica
Proteas were named after the Greek god Proteus, son of Poseidon, who had the ability to transform himself into many different shapes. These plants are known for their unusually shaped, delicate flowers.
Protea Kilimandscharica is found in the heath ecological zone on Mount Kilimanjaro. Also called sugarbushes, proteas are considered to be among the oldest of flowering plants.

Stoebe Kilimandscharica
Stoebe is a genus of African plants in the daisy family. The shrub has slender, wiry branches are covered with small leaves which are pressed to the stem. The flowerheads are located at the ends of the main shoots.
Stoebes are very hardy even invasive plants that are extremely hard to eradicate.

Red Hot PokerThe red hot poker, also know as a torch lily, is a showy and dramatic plant. A member of the liliaceae family, these drought and heat tolerant perennials flourish in the arid areas of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The flowers are a bright orange and yellow, resembling blazing hot metal that has been removed from a forge.

Lobelia Deckenii
Lobelia deckenii is a giant lobelia found only in the high mountains of East Africa, between 12,000 to 15,000 feet. The lobelia grow up to 10 feet high, have hollow stems, and tall flower-like spikes.
This plant has an incredible ability to combat cold. It closes its leaves at night to protect its central core. Leaf rosettes around the stem hold reservoirs of water that freeze into cubicles every night. This layer of ice further protects the core of the plant.

Hebenstretia
Dentata Hebenstretia Dentana is a long-flowering, summer perennial with masses of small white flowers. It’s known as the “white flowering plant.” This perennial forms bushy clumps up to two feet high.
Pure white flowers form along the top of the upright stems which branch at the base. The flowers from early summer to late autumn.

Fireball Lily
The vivid plant is also known as the African Blood Lily. The spectacular flowerhead is a large spherical mass can grow to a diameter of 9 inches wide and is made of up tp 200 tiny florets. Each plant will produce one flowerhead in a season.
The bulbs are toxic if ingested. The extract is used to make poison tip arrows and fishing poison.

Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari
Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari is a giant groundsel found only on Kilimanjaro. These unusual plants inhabit the middle altitudes on the Shira Plateau and around Barranco Camp Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari is slow growing but can reach a height of 20 feet high.
The groundsel has remarkable adaptations for living in the alpine environment. The old dead leaves fold over the trunk to give it insulation. The pith of the stem stores water. Special fluids are secreted that give it resilience to freezing. And like the Lobelia Deckenii its leaves close when it gets cold to keep the frosty air out.

Tussock
Tussock are a group of grass species that grow as singular plants in bunches, rather than forming a sod or lawn. They have long roots that may reach deep into the soil and can obtain more moisture than other grasses and plants during periods of drought.
The tussock grasses of Mount Kilimanjaro provide habitat and food for insects, birds, and small animals.

Old Man’s Beard
Usnea is a genus of pale grayish-green lichens that grow on bark or twigs of host trees. The shrub-like lichen hangs in clumps resembling white hair, thus its common name, old man’s beard. Lichen is not a plant, although it is often mistaken for one. It is a combination of algae and fungi that grow together symbiotically.
The plant body of usnea is used to make medicine for weight loss, pain, fever, and wound healing.

GOMBE NATIONAL PARK

GOMBE NATIONAL PARK

The tiny Gombe stream national park is located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika near the border with Burundi. Even though it is the smallest park in the Tanzania, it has become world-famous through the pioneering work of the passionate Dr Jane Goodall who came to study the behaviour of chimpanzees.
The landscape of the park is made up of steep valleys, streams and rivers. The vegetation changes from tropical rainforests, alpine bamboo to grasslands – similar to that of neighbouring Mahale Mountains National Park. Air charters land in Kigoma, but accessibility into the park is limited to boats departing from Kigoma town.

Highlights
Gombe is famous for a population of chimpanzees live within the park. These incredible primates habituated to humans can be seen on a walking safari through the forests. Other primates seen in the park include vervet monkeys, beachcomber olive baboons and red tailed monkeys.
Bushbucks and bush pigs can also be seen foraging on the forest floors from time to time.
The park is home to over 200 species of birds, amongst the most commonly seen are fish eagles, palm nut vultures, tropical boubous and trumpeter hornbills. Lake Tanganyika with is clear water is home to over 100 cichlid species as well as hippos.

Activities
Walking safaris to see the chimpanzees and forest is the main attraction at Gombe. Lake Tanganyika is also a wonderful place to go snorkelling and swimming, or just relax on the white sand. Hippos and crocodiles tend to keep their distance from Gombe which means visitors can take a dip in the lake without having to worry about sharing the water with wild animals.
While at Gombe a visit to the Goodall Foundation’s old feeding station should be on the list of things to do and the nearby village of Ujiji is where Henry Stanley met Dr Livingstone in 1871.

ABOUT TANZANIA

ABOUT TANZANIA

Tanzania is a vast and mystical country, with breathtaking scenery ranging from the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro in the north to the rugged terrain of the plains of the Serengeti, that stretch west to the edge of Lake Victoria. Just off the east coast, lies the magical clove island of Zanzibar, with its intriguing blend of historical ruins, white sand beaches, and winding streets of old Stone Town. And in the south, the Selous Game Reserve offers a vastly untouched wilderness teeming with wildlife.
Out of the 120 tribes which populate Tanzania, the most remarkable are the Maasai, who live a traditional, tribal lifestyle. Deeply connected to nature, these statuesque herdsmen can often be seen striding across the northern plains.
It was at the Oldupai Gorge, in northern Tanzania, that anthropologists, under the guidance of Mary and Louis Leakey, claimed the discovery of significant links in the chain of human evolution.
As custodians of Africa’s most spectacular wilderness, the Tanzanians are fiercely protective of their natural heritage. A remarkable 25 percent of her land is conserved under National Park status. These parks, famous world wide for their beauty and wildlife, are home to 20 percent of Africa’s large mammal population. They are safe havens for rare and threatened species such as black rhinoceros cheetah and painted wolves.
The home to seven Unesco World Heritage Sites; Tanzania, with a climate and culture as varied as her landscape, offers visitors a wealth of experiences and a host of friendly faces, making this east African country an irresistible destination.

HOW TO GET TANZANIA

The main international road crossings into Tanzania are from Kenya. The most used is the border crossing at Namanga, about halfway between Nairobi and Arusha. The other principle border crossing is south of Mombasa on the coast at Lunga Lunga, from where the nearest large Tanzanian town is Tanga. There are quieter border crossings at Taveta, between Voi and Moshi, and Isebania on the main road between Kisumu and Mwanza.
Border crossings from other neighbouring countries include the Songwe border with Malawi and the Tunduma border with Zambia, both of which are in the southwestern corner of Tanzania and are reached by a good (but long) road from Dar es Salaam. There is a crossing with Uganda at Mutukulu, northwest of Bukoba, but this is a rough road and a remote region to get to. The easiest way to get to Uganda from Tanzania is via Nairobi in Kenya, from where there are daily bus services to Kampala. There is a border crossing with Rwanda at Rusomo, although again this is in the remote northwestern part of Tanzania although there are bus services between Mwanza and Kigali. Tanzania does share a border with Mozambique to the south, but road access between the two countries is very limited.

FLYING TO TANZANIA

International airlines that fly to Dar es Salaam include KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, Emirates,Qatar Airways, Oman Air,Turkish Airlines,South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Egypt Airways, Kenya Airways, Air Uganda, LAM Mozambique Airlines and Rwanda Air. BY RAIL NOTE:
Tanzania – Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), its train journey from Dar es Salaam to Kapirimposhi – Zambia is very long (around 50 hours) and there are frequent delays. The central line between Kigoma and Dar es Salaam carries international freight and passengers in transit from Burundi, DR Congo and Rwanda to the Indian Ocean, and the branch from Tabora to Mwanza carries freight and passengers between Uganda and the Indian Ocean.train from Dar es salaam to Kigoma, Mpanda and Mwanza

GETTING TO TANZANIA BY BOAT
